Sport is a huge modern phenomenon – It attracts worldwide attentionand has the support of numerous corporate sponsors. At the same time, modern sport is having a significant impact on the ecosystem and consumes large quantities of natural resources.

The Green Sports Award wishes to put highlight on and to recognise environmental achievements in the sport sector. The objectives are to promote examples of Best Management practice in sports, to encourage the development and utilisation of innovative environmental technology, to raise awareness of the environmental dimension of sport and its significance to the wider community. Furthermore the award wishes to illustrate the compatibility between sporting success and environmental quality.

The award is created in collaboration with Athens Environmental Foundation and will be presented in Athens during the Olympics, 2004.
